Im Zentrum dieses Buches steht der Ordoliberalismus Deutschlands. Suicidal people committed capital crimes with the explicit goal of “earning” their executions, as a short-cut to their salvation. Desiring to die repentantly at the hands of divinely-instituted government, perpetrators hoped to escape eternal damnation that befell direct suicides. Kathy Stuart shows how this crime emerged as an unintended consequence of aggressive social disciplining campaigns by confessional states. Paradoxically, suicide by proxy exposed the limits of early modern state power, as governments struggled unsuccessfully to suppress the tactic. Some perpetrators committed arson or blasphemy, or confessed to long-past crimes, usually infanticide, or bestiality. Most frequently, however, they murdered young children, believing that their innocent victims would also enter paradise. The crime had cross-confessional appeal, as illustrated in case studies of Lutheran Hamburg and Catholic Vienna. This volume gathers empirical and historical perspectives on closed captioning on German television for children who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing. It is partly based on a two-year study, SDH4KIDS, in which the following research question was addressed: Which subtitle-specific aspects have a positive impact on comprehensibility and acceptability of subtitled TV-programmes for d/Deaf and hard of hearing children aged between 8 and 12 ? The quantitative study with over 200 participants was accompanied by a qualitative study gathering eye-tracking data on subtitle reading behaviour with a smaller group of participants of the same age. Both studies are presented and discussed in detail. The results were furthermore used to develop guidelines for professional subtitling practice. In addition, this book provides a historical overview of subtitling practice for people who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing in the Federal Republic and the former German Democratic Republic of Germany. For this, previously unpublished material from the German Federal Archives has been examined.

Leopold Koppel (1854 –1933) war zu seiner Zeit eine der bedeutendsten Persönlichkeiten des deutschen Wirtschaftslebens, als Investor und Stifter. Sein erster großer Coup gelang ihm in der Gasbeleuchtung, sein zweiter mit elektrischem Licht – und der Marke Osram. Mittels Übernahme chancenreicher Unternehmen besetzte er auch in der Hotellerie und Gastronomie erste Plätze. Neue Dimensionen erschloss er sich als Wissenschaftsmäzen mit Allerhöchster Anerkennung. Als erstrangiger Financier der Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft setzte er auf die Physikalische Chemie, die er auch rüstungs-industriell nutzte. In den Weimarer Jahren schwanden Tatkraft und Bedeutung, doch selbst den Rückbau seines Konzerns unternahm er strategisch. Leopold Koppel starb im Spätsommer 1933; die Enteignung blieb ihm erspart. Zwei Enkel wurden im US-Exil zu erfolgreichen Unternehmern, ebenfalls mit Zugang zum politischen Gipfel. This edited volume examines women's voices in phenomenology, many of which had a formative impact on the movement but have be kept relatively silent for many years. It features papers that truly extend the canonical scope of phenomenological research. Readers will discover the rich philosophical output of such scholars as Edith Stein, Hedwig Conrad-Martius, and Gerda Walther. They will also come to see how the phenomenological movement allowed its female proponents to achieve a position in the academic world few women could enjoy at the time.
